Ingredients and Substitutions
Milk. I use oat milk for this recipe, but you can try your favorite plant-based milk, or even dairy milk! All plant-based milk should be unsweetened, and unflavored or vanilla-flavored.
- If you’re using coconut milk, it’s better to make it with the one you get at the dairy section, not the canned one.
Honey. If you’re looking for a vegan version, you can use maple syrup and get a similar result. You can also use vegan honey - just know that it has cane sugar. If you’re looking to cut down some carbs, sweeteners are also an option.
Ice. I like to use matcha or matcha latte ice for this recipe, as using it instead of water ice cubes makes more creamy and even stronger drink. You can, however, use normal ice cubes and still get a delicious iced latte.
Matcha. It needs to be 100% matcha powder. I use a culinary grade for this recipe. When using a sweetener and milk with matcha, I don’t think it makes an enormous difference choosing this over a ceremonial grade. Also, after opening, store your matcha powder correctly to keep it for longer.
No, it does not have coffee. However, it contains caffeine.
You can taste the earthiness of the matcha powder, but is way less strong that a cup of pure matcha. Milk softens its taste, making a creamy, tea-like beverage.
Yes, if made with good ingredients and consumed with moderation. Matcha powder and honey have health benefits, and this homemade version has way fewer calories and is cane-sugar free.
Substitute matcha powder for a bag of unflavored pure green tea. Instead of mixing matcha powder, hot water and honey, do this: mix 1 tablespoon of honey into ¼ cup of hot water until dissolved and steep a bag of green tea in it for 5 minutes. Press the bag to get most of the water out and proceed with the remaining steps. I don’t recommend it as the drink won’t taste the same than one made with matcha powder, but it’s doable.
How to Make It
Making ice cubes
You can use matcha ice cubes, matcha latte ice cubes and normal, water ice cubes:
- Water ice cubes: use filtered water to fill an ice cube tray. Freeze it until ice cubes set.
- Matcha ice cubes: mix 1 teaspoon of matcha and 1 cup of hot water, until powder is dissolved and free of lumps. Use a manual or electric whisker. Fill an ice cube tray, freezing it until ice cubes set.
- Matcha latte ice cubes: mix 1 teaspoon of matcha and 1 cup of hot milk, until powder is dissolved and free of lumps. Use a manual or electric whisker. Fill an ice cube tray, freezing it until ice cubes set.
Making Matcha
Mix honey with hot water, whisking it until it dissolves.
It is super important to use hot water for that: honey won’t dissolve into room temperature or cold water.
Add matcha powder and whisk until no lumps remain.
Making Iced Matcha Latte
Fill a tall glass with your choice of ice cubes. Pour oat milk (or your choice of milk) over it.
Add honey matcha mixture, stirring it before drinking.
Serve it right away!
Tips
Making matcha without lumps: you need to use a whisk. If you’re having problem with persistent lumps every time, try whisking the amount of powder you’re using before adding the liquid.
Making iced matcha latte without lumps: you can use a blender to mix the ingredients. Dissolve the honey first, then blend everything together and you’ll have a lump-free iced matcha latte.
Sweeter version: add 1 ½ tablespoons of honey instead of only 1.
Variations
- Keto Version: use coconut or almond milk instead of oat milk, and substitute honey for your favorite keto sweetener (I usually go for monk sugar or erythritol).
- Vegan Version: substitute honey for vegan honey (contains can sugar) or maple syrup.
Storing and Making Ahead
The recipe makes enough for 1 serving. You can save time by doubling or tripling the recipe and making a big batch.
Store it in the fridge: it’s good for 3 days.
Remember to stir before consuming stored iced matcha latte, as matcha powder will deposit at the bottom of the jar after some time. And pour over ice just before ready to drink!
