🍵Should I drink matcha hot or cold?
Matcha is amazing, both hot and cold. But the temperature can affect the taste of the drink.
A warm matcha latte will be sweeter, nuttier and creamier, while its iced version will give you a more refreshing and smoother taste.
🍵What kind of matcha powder does Starbucks use?
It is said that Starbucks uses a matcha powder that comes from a very credible Japanese company. The powder used at the United States has not only matcha, but at least 50% of sugar mixed.
📝Ingredients and substitutions
Milk: Milk should be unsweetened and unflavored. You can use regular milk, or your favorite plant-based milk.
- If you’re using coconut milk, it’s better to make it with ready-to-drink coconut milk instead of using canned.
- Almond, cashew, soy and oat milk are good substitutes for regular milk when making this recipe.
Sweetener: I like to sweeten my matcha latte with honey, but there are a lot of substitutes for this ingredient. f you’re looking for a vegan version, you can use maple syrup and get a similar result. You can also use vegan honey, sugar, or simple sugar syrup. If you’re looking to cut down some carbs, using your favorite sweetener is also an option.
Matcha: it needs to be 100% matcha. Don't use any powder that's mixed with sugar and/or milk.
I know, as I said above, Starbucks uses a "matcha powder" that's 51% sugar, but using it leaves you without much choice regarding the sweetness level of your drink.
- Remember: after opening, store your matcha powder correctly to keep it for longer.
🧊My secret ingredient
I love both hot and iced version of matcha latte, but during summer, it's impossible to have it without lots of ice! The problem is: adding too much ice can make a watery beverage if you're a slower drinker like me.
My secret ingredient is matcha latte ice cubes. Using it instead of water ice cubes makes a creamier drink.
🫗How to make it
Making ice cubes:
You can use matcha ice cubes, matcha latte ice cubes and normal, water ice cubes:
- Water ice cubes: use filtered water to fill an ice cube tray. Freeze it until ice cubes set.
- Matcha ice cubes: mix 1 teaspoon of matcha and 1 cup of hot water, until powder is dissolved and free of lumps. Use a manual or electric whisker. Fill an ice cube tray, freezing it until ice cubes set.
- Matcha latte ice cubes: mix 1 teaspoon of matcha and 1 cup of hot milk, until powder is dissolved and free of lumps. Use a manual or electric whisker. Fill an ice cube tray, freezing it until ice cubes set.
Making Matcha:
Mix the sweetener you're using with water, whisking it until it fully dissolves.
- When using honey, it's important to use hot water: it won’t dissolve well if using room temperature or cold water.
Add matcha powder and whisk until no lumps remain.
Preparing Iced Matcha Latte:
Fill a tall glass with your choice of ice cubes. Pour oat milk (or your choice of milk) over it.
Add honey matcha mixture, stirring it before drinking.
Serve it right away!
🍃Make matcha without lumps
- Use a whisk. If you’re having problem with persistent lumps every time, try whisking the amount of powder you’re using before adding the liquid.
- Use a blender. Blend all ingredients but the ice cubes for at least 30 seconds.
🤷🏻♀️FAQ
No, it does not have coffee. However, it contains caffeine. If you're looking for a recipe with both matcha and coffee, I have a delicious Dirty Matcha for you to try.
You can taste the earthiness of the matcha powder, but is way less strong that a cup of pure matcha. Milk softens its taste, making a smoother beverage.
A grande version of Starbucks Iced Matcha Latte has 200 calories.
You can't really make an iced matcha latte with a tea bag: it will be an iced green tea latte, as they are different ingredients. If you, however, want to substitute matcha for green tea in this recipe, instead of mixing matcha powder with hot water, steep a bag of green tea in it for 5 minutes. Press the bag to get most of the water out and proceed with the remaining steps.
🫙Storing and making ahead
The recipe makes enough for 1 serving.
Store it in the fridge if not consuming right away. After prepared, this recipe keeps good for 3 days if refrigerated.
Remember to stir before consuming, as matcha powder will deposit at the bottom of the jar after some time. Add ice just before serving! And for the perfect combination, have it along a fudgy white chocolate matcha cookie.
