Thai Tea Syrup is a simple syrup made with Thai Tea Mix. It's perfect for adding this flavor to your favorite drinks, and you can make a batch and refrigerate it for a quick Thai Milk Tea!
I love having a good syrup in hand for busy days. Just like the Earl Grey syrup - my readers’ favorite! - this Thai syrup is fantastic to make a 30 seconds milk tea, and the recipe is very flexible and forgiving. It’s impossible to mess up!
Ingredients
Thai Tea Mix. Choose your favorite Thai Tea Mix for this recipe. I used Number One Brand when making it: it has a delicious subtle vanilla hint and a beautiful orange color.
Sugar. Granulated or caster work. Don’t use icing sugar. You can substitute with your favorite sweetener. If doing so, check the conversion amount you should use. If substituting for:
- Xylitol: use 1 cup.
- Stevia: use ¼ cup.
- Erythritol: use 1 ⅓ cup.
- Monk Sugar: use 1 cup.
- Coconut Sugar: use 1 cup.
- Organic Agave Sweetener: use ⅔ cup.
- Honey: use 1 cup.
Spices. These 3 spices are completely optional, as they’re already in the mix. However, I think adding them gives the syrup more depth of flavor, creating a very authentic Thai tea experience. If you don’t want to use more spices, don’t worry, you’ll still get a delicious thai tea syrup without it.
- Green Cardamom. 1 pod.
- Nutmeg. ⅛ tsp.
- Star Anise. 1 piece.
How to make it
Step 01. In a medium pan, add water, Thai tea, sugar, and the optional cardamom, star anise, and nutmeg. Over high heat, bring it to a boil, then lower the heat and let it simmer for 5 minutes.
Step 02. Pour the syrup through a fine mesh strainer to remove the tea and spices.
If you want a stronger flavor, let the mixture steep for 1 to 2 hours before removing the tea leaves and spices.
Step 03. Wait for the syrup to cool. Store in the refrigerator using an airtight container.
If you want an extra clear syrup, use a coffee filter instead of a strainer to remove the tea leaves.
Where to use it
Use this syrup to sweeten and add Thai tea flavor to drinks and cocktails. Thai Tea Lemonade can be sweetened with this syrup instead of sugar!
This syrup also makes a quick Thai Tea Milk: just add 1 to 2 tablespoons of syrup to 1 cup of milk over ice, stir to mix and in less than a minute you’ll have it ready to drink.
