Ingredients

  • 2 cups water or milk
  • 1 tablespoon matcha powder
  • 1 tablespoon sugar optional

Instructions

  • In a jar with a lid, cocktail shaker or blender, add matcha powder, water or milk, and sugar or sweetener if using.
  • Blend or shake until the ingredients are well combined and the matcha is fully incorporated into the liquid.
  • Pour the matcha into the ice tray and freeze until set. It usually takes from 5 to 6 hours for matcha ice to set.
  • After it has set, if your ice tray is not covered or you won’t use the ice cubes for the next 24 hours, place them into an airtight container or bag to avoid off-flavors they can get from the fridge.

Notes

Expert Tips:
  • It takes a bit longer for the ice cubes to freeze if using sugar. Don’t use more than 5 tablespoons, or the ice won’t set properly. Also, the smaller the size, the faster the ice cubes will take to freeze.
  • If using a sweetener, don’t forget to check the amount you need to use equivalent to the sugar amount this recipe asks for. Different sweeteners have different levels of sweetness.
  • If using honey instead of sugar, shake well or dissolve the honey into 3 tablespoons of hot water before adding to the recipe, as it can be harder to dilute this ingredient using cold/room temperature water.
  • Regarding color, the intensity of the green depends on the matcha quality. Better matcha makes greener ice cubes, while ice cubes made with low-grade matcha have more of a dull green.
